The Flame of Desire

On a wooden throne I sit alone
Gorging upon my meal my body aglow
I must from my confinement go
To seek that which I once did know

My emotions red they raging spread
Across the meadow and through the trees
As I race across the open space
Filled with burning joy and glee

In the night I see the lights
That lead to where my destination lies
She is the one why does she run
Inside a part of me dies

I continue on until the dawn
Seeking but never finding
The love I desire is not mine to acquire
I realize as my heart starts unwinding

As I lay there weeping and weak
The inner fire’s true desire my emotions once a raging pyre
Now turned to ash my life is bleak
I feel my last ember go out as down I lie
The final plume evaporates as I die

This poem was a bit of a experiment in writing in a different style from what I’m used to. Originally intended to be the first in a series of poems about the four elements, this poem compares the attributes of fire to the feelings of love and uncontrolled passion.

While part of me dislikes the overall pacing and structure of this work, I cannot totally abandon it. I also cannot say for certain that the other poems in the cycle will never be written, although if I ever do write them, they will most likely be in my more traditional style.

If you enjoyed this poem, or want me to continue the series, please feel free to leave me feedback. I will see you all next time.
