The Deck of Life

Every morning I wake up, I shuffle the deck of life
Will it deal me pleasure and comfort, or pain and strife
What obstacles will it deal me this day
Will I overcome them with gusto, or fail with dismay

The “Go to Work” card is the first to be revealed
Yet it has an effect on it that remains yet concealed
Maybe I’ll have a great day or even go home early
Or perhaps I’ll have to deal with people both angry and surly

The “Depression” card is revealed next
What lies hidden beneath its subtext
I try to counter it with a saving throw
I just barely beat it this time, what do you know

So I reveal the next card from the deck
I need something good, I feel like a wreck
It’s the “Relaxation” card, and it’s long overdue
Many hours of bliss and excitement ensue

I draw my final card at the end of the day
It’s the “Day Off” card, bringing me joy in every way
I shuffle the deck before settling in to rest
In order to ready myself for the deck’s next test
