New Year, New Hope

2020 is dead, all hail the new year
In comes the promise of hope, out goes unending fear
The future is a book which pages lie unwritten
Will civilizations unite, or remain in eternal opposition?

Disease runs yet rampant, though treatment is finally at hand
The time has now come to unite and take a stand
Will we be the cause of new ills, or the creators of the cure?
It is hard to judge at this moment, the future remains unsure

We have yet to face our struggles unending
There yet remain several issues that urgently need tending
Who now will rise up and take hold of the reins
Who will cure us of our ills, relieve us of our pains?

The path of the new year remains winding and unknown
Will we continue to wander further away, or finally return home?
Many mysteries remain unsolved in the weeks ahead
Will we greet them in anticipation, or filled with dread?

Darkness yet hides the path behind and ahead
Do not fear, the light will soon shine in its stead
As we step into the unknown, our experiences yet a mystery
2020 slowly fades finally into the darkness of history.

Happy new year to all my readers. I hope your New Year’s Eve was enjoyable and you aren’t nursing too bad of a headache today.

For the first poem of the new year, I wanted to reflect on where we had been last year, as well as look forward to the promise of the new year. We have experienced a lot of trauma as a nation and a world last year. While I remain skeptical that the turning of the calendar will change that much, I wanted to ensure that the hope many seem to have now was worked into my writings as well. As a result I ended up with a poem that reflects those contradicting philosophies into one. Both hope and fear are deeply intertwined into the message of this particular poem.

I have several ideas I am working on for new poems this year, as well as a few older poems I still want to publish. I would like to publish more optimistic poems this year, and have a few ideas I’m kicking around but time and the muses will tell if that comes to fruition or not.

I hope you all make your new year the best it can be, and will see you all again soon.
